Friday, October 9, Emmy Destin – Madame Butterfly on Edison I haven’t posted any Edison Diamond Discs before now, but my new turntable has a switch which enables playing vertically-cut records such as Edisons. I’m up to 16 Diamond Discs of various types, including jazz, early country, and classical. Here’s a nice one: Edison Diamond Discs don’t look or play like any other records of the time. The difference is obvious at first glance: And they’re not even 78s, they’re “80s,” since they play properly at 80 RPM.

Early life[ edit ] Victor de Sabata was born in Trieste , at the time part of Austria-Hungary , but now part of Italy. His Roman Catholic father, Amedeo de Sabata, was a professional singing teacher and chorus master, and his mother, Rosita Tedeschi, a talented amateur musician, was Jewish. In Milan, de Sabata studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, excelling at piano, violin, theory, composition and conducting, and graduating cum laude in composition, piano and violin.

He would remain a virtuoso pianist and violinist up until the end of his life. Ravel said that de Sabata was a conductor “the like of which I have never before encountered” [13] [14] and wrote him a note the next day saying that “You have given me one of the most complete joys of my career”.

Cars have long had music players beyond radio. Anyone of a certain age will remember 8-track and cassette players. A new technology came on the market in the mid s and early s that freed drivers from commercials and unreliable broadcast signals, allowing them to be the masters of their motoring soundtrack with their favorite pressed vinyl spinning on a record player mounted under the dash.

Boynton Briefing – Jan. 20-22, 2018

Introduction Antique phonographs are fun, functional machines! Are you thinking of starting a phonograph collection? Did you just find one at a shop, online, or in your garage, and are trying to make sense of what it is? Have you had one in your home for some time and trying to learn more about it? This guide is intended as advice to those building a collection and looking for straightforward tips on how to judge the quality of an antique musical machine for the most value and enjoyment.

My suggestions are focused on phonographs from the acoustic era:

Sep 25,  · Last week, Massachusetts’s Attleboro Public Library received a big surprise when one of its regular patrons returned a copy of T.S. Arthur’s The Young Lady at Home more than 78 .

By John Mitchell “The whole album is a delight but the two openers find Ronnie at the very top of his game. This is an album that should be added to the collection of all Ronnie Earl fans and deserves to bring his playing to a new audience. Ronnie on guitar, Dave Limina on keys, Lorne Entress on drums and Jim Mouradian on bass; sadly Jim passed away after the release of this album so this may be his last recording.

As has been the case for several years now Diane Blue provides vocals here on five cuts, the rest being instrumentals and Nicholas Tabarias plays second guitar on some tracks. The title of the album references the late David Maxwell who played with The Broadcasters, as well as the one-time meeting place for blues musicians in Chicago. Ronnie wrote five songs here one with Diane , there is one by Dave and four covers from a typically diverse range of sources.

The whole album is a delight but the two openers find Ronnie at the very top of his game: As with most Ronnie Earl albums this one makes great late-night listening and probably features as much great guitar playing as any of his extensive discography.

If this item contains incorrect or inappropriate information please contact us here to flag it for review. All have been stored in what appears to be their original sleeves, though I’m sure some have been interchanged. A few sleeves have a handwritten note on them. The records appear to be in reasonable-to-good condition given their age, with some discoloration and a few scratches. I don’t have a means of playing them to check for sound quality, but if you have a question about a particular record in the lot, drop me a note and I’ll answer it as best I can.

Sep 28,  · FRAME No BICYCLE DATING. HOW OLD IS MY BICYCLE? ‘How old is my bicycle?’ is a question I get asked a lot, nearly as much as: ‘I have a bicycle that looks like one of yours; if I send you pictures please can you identify it for me?’.

In the case of antique phonographs, I politely demur — sadly shaking my head and lamenting that there are scores of different models, and condition is all-important. Plus, there are many, many phony phonographs out there, put together by basement handymen or by Asian factories. What then can someone expect to find when searching for real antique phonographs?

Here is sampling of common and rare machines that collectors look for. This is an early version with a flat crank. Later versions used a rod-type crank.

Encountering Antique Phonographs

The needle is gripped in the Soundbox by a thumbscrew, typically the needle protrudes about 1cm from the Soundbox. Most Soundboxes fit on the Tonearm in a fixed position, but some are free to rotate on the Tonearm; the Needle should never be placed vertically above the record, the correct angle the needle should make when playing a record is approximately 60 degrees.

Before commencing to play a record, with the turntable brake applied fully wind the Gramophone. As with the generations before you; don’t worry about over-winding.

An archive in Canada holds prints of many of this series, and it really is past time for some enterprising business to release it on to dvd. It’s no masterpiece, but it does have the distinction of being the first British made filmed crime series shown in Britain.

In this lesson we are going to review by going over two of the tunes you already know, Cripple Creek, and Fireball Mail, both based on the playing of bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs. Both Scruggs recordings are from the classic Foggy Mountain Banjo album, recorded on Columbia- which apparently is back in print, and available from Amazon. The next three Cripple Creek MP3 examples are all fiddle recordings.

The lead fiddler is probably Clayton McMichen, and the singer is Riley Puckett, who had already achieved prominence as the first country music singing star. This is a Smithsonian field recording made around , and was released on the Folkways album Traditional Music from Grayson and Carroll Counties, Virginia. The third example is a recording of the late Senator Robert Byrd, who was not only one of the most powerful politicians in America, but was also an excellent old-time fiddler.

It was released on a County Records album entitled entitled U. Senator Robert Byrd, Mountain Fiddler.

Atco and Cotillion were subsidiary labels and Clarion was a budget label. Atlantic recorded rhythm and blues, jazz, blues, country and western, rock and roll, gospel, and comedy. Ahmet Ertegun was born in in Turkey, and came to the United States at the age of 11 when his father was appointed the Turkish Ambassador to the United States. Ahmet fell in love with the United States, particularly the music.

He and his older brother Nesuhi born collected over 15, jazz and blues 78s. Ahmet went to St.

As my hobby in phonographs grew so did my collection of 78 rpm records that went along with it. I then became fascinated by the number of record companies and labels that sprang up to meet the need for recorded music as well as the history of the labels.

Boynton Briefing – Jan. After the victim told Riddick to leave his residence she walked out of the home while recording the incident on her cell phone. Prior to leaving the area Riddick pointed the gun through the blinds of a broken window while yelling profanities. Later Riddick posted the incident on Snap Chat.

Riddick was located in front of her own residence where she was placed under arrest and transported to BBPD. Victim reported that unknown suspects entered the fenced compound located at the business and appeared to be searching for copper material in several of the containers located there.

Collecting Antique Phonographs

The album covers featured several of the famous striking photographs taken by Robert Hupka of Toscanini in rehearsal. Initially, only mono versions were issued. Then, in an attempt to satisfy fans of stereo , a number of “reprocessed” or “electronic” stereo versions were issued; generally, these were less than satisfactory because the tapes seldom had high enough fidelity to justify the separation of highs and lows, changes in equalization for each channel, or use of out-of-phase effects.

The RCA Corporation was a major American electronics company, which was founded as the Radio Corporation of America in It was initially a wholly owned subsidiary of General Electric (GE); however, in , GE was required to divest its control as part of the settlement of a government antitrust suit.. At its height as an independent company, RCA was the dominant communications firm in.

Labelography of Home Recording Discs Note: I haven’t kept up with this project over the past few years, but here, at least, is an updated version of the labelography page, with certain links fixed. The principal goal of this project is to assemble an illustrated list of label types found on home recording discs of the mid-twentieth century. A further and perhaps more important goal is to produce a dating guide for home recording discs.

Obviously there is no way to determine the date of an undated home recording with certainty based only on the label type. People often used blank discs many years after they were originally produced; I have discs in my collection manufactured during World War Two but recorded in the s, and some people are still making recordings on vintage blanks. However, by determining approximately when each label type was originally introduced, we can at least come up with a set of earliest possible recording dates for disc home recordings.

For example, a disc with a label type introduced about cannot have been recorded earlier than that, although it could have been recorded much later. Furthermore, it is likely that a majority of discs were in fact recorded a short time after their initial sale, so we might eventually be able to hazard educated guesses of, say, “circa ” based on a given label type.

The Goths originally lived north of the Danube. According to their legend, they migrated to the Black Sea area from the island of Scandza in the Baltic Sea [1]. They separated into two tribal groups, the Visigoths to the west and the Ostrogoths to the east. Under pressure from the Huns, they sought permission from the Roman Emperor Valens to move into the Roman empire to the south of the river Danube in The inevitable conflicts culminated in , when the Goths defeated the Romans at Adrianople and killed the emperor.

Following this, the Visigoths drifted westwards through the Balkans and Italy, finally settling in south-west France around Toulouse [2].

This is all published freely on the internet by us to further the scene, not to give any seller undeserved credibility. Learn Your Vinyl Originals This page gets a lot of Hits, the most of all our Records pages. You need to be Very Careful what you believe in buying online as for Major Artists especially The Beatles there are so many Fake items being offered. Buying Vinyl today, or anything that makes more money than most similar items, you really do need to be sure you are actually buying the Original if you are paying a price that the Original would command.

The amount of genuine reissues on different labels and numbers is also mixed with a large amount of “repros” that are now over 30 years old looking very similar to the real item, which are unlicensed bootlegs. Some Official Licensed reissues may confuse too, so look for text on the label to show they are. Only Comparing to known Real Ones will teach you. To the experienced buyer these stand out obviously as “repros” but you have to learn to spot real from repro without wasting money when other bids may hint at an item being more than it is, and the Sheep Effect gains more bidders who think if others bid it must be right.

Those other bidders may not really exist however. Only proves ebay don’t care, so only you can safeguard your money from these parasites with fake items. The record companies have no interest in reissuing these items to such a small market, as in under copies, so the bootleggers take over and as long as buyers know what they are, there should be no problem.
